Thomas Mendel, MD

Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center

Dr. Thomas Mendel is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and serves on the faculty at Nationwide Children's Hospital. He is a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon specializing in both adult and pediatric retinal diseases, with particular expertise in inherited retinal disorders, retinal detachment, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and pediatric retina surgery. Dr. Mendel completed his ophthalmology residency at the Vanderbilt Eye Institute, followed by vitreoretinal surgery fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute and additional subspecialty fellowship training in pediatric vitreoretinal surgery at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center. He also earned both his MD and PhD degrees from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. ( In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Mendel leads a translational research laboratory focused on developing innovative gene therapies for inherited retinal diseases. His work combines advanced surgical techniques with cutting-edge molecular and genetic research aimed at restoring vision and improving outcomes for patients with retinal disorders.

Bradford Tannen, M.D., J.D., M.B.A.

Vernon Smith Professor and Department Chair

Bradford Tannen, M.D., J.D., M.B.A. is the Vernon Smith Professor and Chair at the University of Kentucky Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Science. He previously served as the Terry J. Bergstrom Collegiate Professor of Ophthalmology and the Ophthalmology Residency Program Director at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center. He has been actively involved in medical and surgical education for the past 16 years. He received his A.B. in Economics from the University of Michigan, a JD/MBA from the University of Oregon, and his MD from the University of Pennsylvania. He did his residency training in Ophthalmology at UMDNJ (Rutgers) where he was elected Chief Resident, followed by a cornea fellowship at Johns Hopkins. Prior to Medical School, he served as an extern clerk to Chief United States District Court Judge Alan Kay, and practiced law in the areas of civil rights, commercial and appellate litigation. His recent research has focused mainly in the areas of clinical and surgical learning and assessing competency development utilizing AI and Big Data. Other areas of research include imaging in uveitis, cornea surgical and clinical care, cataract surgery, and globe trauma. He is one of the founding members of SAIVO, the Society for Artificial Intelligence in Vision and Ophthalmology, and helped to launch AIVO, the first journal dedicated to AI in Vision and Ophthalmology.

Taylor Strange, D.O.

Dr. Taylor Strange is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in comprehensive ophthalmology, cataract surgery, and refractive vision correction. He is the founder of Alliance Vision Institute, a full-service ophthalmic practice serving the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. Dr. Strange completed his undergraduate education at the University of North Texas, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He subsequently obtained both a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the University of North Texas Health Science Center. He completed a transitional internship at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, followed by residency training in ophthalmology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Following completion of his residency in 2014, Dr. Strange practiced as a comprehensive ophthalmologist in Fort Worth and Waco, Texas, prior to founding Alliance Ophthalmology in 2017, where he continues to provide advanced medical and surgical eye care. Dr. Strange is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology (2016–2026). His clinical interests include cataract surgery, refractive surgery, glaucoma management, and the integration of advanced intraocular technologies to improve patient outcomes. Dr. Strange has contributed to the academic and clinical advancement of ophthalmology through research, presentations, and leadership in multicenter clinical trials. He presented at the 2024-2026 American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS) Annual Meetings.

Hans Bruhn has more than 33 years of experience working in the medical malpractice / professional liability insurance field. He has worked for several national medical malpractice insurance companies and brokers during his career. Currently, he is a Risk Manager with Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company (OMIC) based in San Francisco, California. He has been with OMIC for 20 years. In his current position, Hans works with physicians and their staff, advising them on how to reduce the risk of medical malpractice claims in their practice. In addition, Hans travels across the United States, giving presentations to various medical and subspecialty societies on risk management topics. Hans earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education (BS-Ed) from the University of Wisconsin and a Master’s of Science degree in Health Services Administration (MHS) from Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, CA.

Collin McClelland, MD

Collin McClelland, MD is a neuro-ophthalmologist and adult strabismus surgeon in private practice at the Northwest Eye Clinic in the Minneapolis, Minnesota region. He completed residency in Ophthalmology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and fellowship in Neuro-ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. McClelland is a Fellow of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society (NANOS). He has spent 14 years in academic medicine, serving on faculty at Washington University in Saint Louis (2012–2015) and the University of Minnesota (2015–2026), where he earned multiple teaching and service awards. He remains active in academic medicine as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota, continuing to teach resident physicians and medical students. In addition to clinical care, Dr. McClelland has served on over 15 committees for the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society (NANOS) including the Neuro-ophthalmology BCSC writing committee and authored over 95 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in the domain of Neuro-ophthalmology and adult strabismus. He actively serves as a journal reviewer for over 10 journals, teaches courses at the annual AAO meeting, and currently serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology and EyeNet magazine.

Vahid Mohammadzadeh, M.D.

PGY-3 Ophthalmology Resident

University of Louisville

Dr. Vahid Mohammadzadeh is a PGY-3 ophthalmology resident at the University of Louisville and a graduate of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, where he also completed his first ophthalmology residency at Farabi Eye Hospital. He previously completed a clinical and research fellowship at the Stein Eye Institute, University of California, Los Angeles. His academic interests focus on glaucoma, artificial intelligence in ophthalmology, and structural-functional correlations in glaucoma progression. His current research includes developing AI models to predict glaucoma progression and creating multimodal visualization platforms integrating OCT and visual field data. Dr. Mohammadzadeh has presented his work at national and international meetings, including American Academy of Ophthalmology, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and American Glaucoma Society. He plans to pursue glaucoma fellowship training and a career in academic ophthalmology as a clinician-scientist.

Andrea Tooley, MD

Culofacial/Orbital Surgeon & Director of Aesthetics

Innovative Ophthalmology (Paducah, KY)

Andrea Tooley, MD is an oculofacial and orbital surgeon, and the director of aesthetics at Innovative Ophthalmology in Paducah, Kentucky. She was previously Associate Professor of oculoplastic and orbital surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as well as Program Director for the ophthalmology residency at Mayo Clinic. She completed her ASOPRS fellowship in New York City through Weill Cornell, Columbia University, New York University, and Manhattan Ear, Eye, and Throat Hospital. Her clinical and research interests include orbital inflammatory and neoplastic disease, as well as periocular rejuvenation and reconstruction. She has published over 95 peer-reviewed manuscripts on these topics. Dr. Tooley was recognized by the Ophthalmology Power List as a Rising Star in 2017, and won the Emerging Leader Award from Women in Ophthalmology in 2019. Dr. Tooley served as the chairperson of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Young Ophthalmologist Committee and has been awarded the AAO Secretariat award in 2020 and 2021 for her commitment to advocacy and membership for AAO. She currently serves on the Secretariat for State Affairs for AAO, question writing committees for the ABO, and the podcast committee for ASOPRS. Dr. Tooley is passionate about education and mentorship for ophthalmologists. She previously co-hosted the Mayo Clinic Ophthalmology Podcast and is influential on social media.
